In 2008, the SFBTA Board of Directors established that Brief Family Therapy Center materials donated by Sarah Berg, Insoo Kim Berg’s daughter, should be preserved in an archive. Frank Thomas was selected after a competitive search to be the inaugural archivist and has done an outstanding job since then. As archivist, he has collected material (videos, letters, unpublished manuscripts, published manuscripts, books, emails, VHS and DVD recordings, photos, and much more), catalogued and digitized the material, and preserved the material for the SFBT community. He developed a guide for the use of the materials, and made recommendations to the Board about the preservation and use of archived material. As archivist, he has shown an amazing amount of dedication, organizational skills, and competence at using archival principles in preserving the important work of Insoo Kim Berg, Steve de Shazer, and the Brief Family Therapy Center. He has our perpetual gratitude. Thus, he is named the “Founding Archivist” by the Board of Directors of the Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Association.
The Board of Directors of the SFBTA decided to proceed with a new process for filling open positions on the governing board of the Association. Three positions are open and will be appointed from the advisory election results of a brief business meeting. President Stephen Langer will convene this business meeting on Friday, November 4th at the Annual Conference in Halifax. The advisory election is an intermediate step toward the goal of directly electing Directors of the Association as proposed by the Community Task Force and recently adopted by the Board. Legal changes in the SFBTA governing documents (bylaws and articles of incorporation) are pending regulatory approval and should be in place early in 2017 to allow the direct election at the next conference. If you are interested in the governance of the Association, please plan to attend this business meeting. It will be listed in the schedule of the conference events in Halifax. Nominations will be taken from the attendees present in the meeting and nominees must be in attendance to stand for election.
SFBTA has been part of the planning process for the SF world conference. It will take place on 22-24 September 2017 in Bad Soden, Germany (near Frankfurt airport). The aim of the organizers of the SF World Conference is to.. "bring together Solution Focused practitioners from all over the world and from all applications of Solution Focus: therapy, organizational work, education, social work, etc. We want to be as inclusive of all SF practitioners and their organisations and networks as possible to facilitate learning, exchange, mutual support, and the further development of Solution Focused practice all over the world. We want to honor the SF roots in Milwaukee and envision together what the future is bringing to us. In order to truly live our inclusive ethos, we are also actively seeking for possibilities to make this event accessible for those who cannot be there in person potentially via internet streaming or other technical means." Early in 2015, a dedicated group of SFBT practitioners began work toward fundamental change in the functioning of the Solution Focused Brief Therapy Association. This group (dubbed the Community Task Force) began with suggestions from the larger SFBT Community gathered in a meeting at the Annual Conference in Santa Fe, NM. From this source, consensus formed that change was necessary in the definition of membership, the structure of the board of directors and promotion of regional interest groups of SFBT practitioners. Work groups of CTF members with logistical support from board members are now in the final stages of this change process. Specific, concrete alterations in bylaws, procedures, and redistribution of resources are now underway. These are exciting changes. The hope is that with change will come the continued vibrancy and evolution of both Solution Focused Brief Therapy as well as the Association that supports the approach and its practitioners.
